British communities brought rugby to Genoa between 1890 and 1895. It remains stronger in the North of Italy than in the Centre or the South.
Italy have improved over the past few decades with that good results against other nations and finishing in the last 16 in the 1991, '95 and '99 World Cups almost lead to them joining what was then the Five nations championship. Italy finally joined the Six Nations Championship in 2000, and won their opening game against reigning champions Scotland by 34-20.
The 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 tournaments both ended with a bottom place finish for the Italian team, although they are improving considerably with each successive year.
