6 Nations: National Sides

Wales

The Welsh Rugby Union was first formed in 1881 in Glamorganshire, to organise a match between England and Wales, played on the 19th February 1881 with a win for England. Wales were a strong team in the early days of international rugby, winning the (then) British Championship six times and finishing runners-up six times in its first twelve years.

In 1911 Wales earned the first official Grand Slam by winning all their matches in the British Championship. In 1931 Wales won their first championship for nine years and in 1933 beat England at Twickenham for the first time. Further Grand Slam wins came in 1950 and 1952.

The Welsh team of the '70s has gone down in history as quite possibly the best of all time, notchin up a 27 match unbeaten run. The first Rugby Word Cup in 1987 saw Wales claim third place. A poor period followed in the '90's, and early part of this decade, until a glorious 2005 Six Nations in which they beat every team to take the championship.

In 2006 Wales had a poor tournament and finished in 5th place.

The 2008 Six Nations saw a magnificent series of performances, winning all 5 games and taking both the Triple Crown and the Six Nations title beating France 29-12 in the last game of the tournament at the Millenium Stadium. In 2009 and 2010 they finished 4th.
